Sunrise and sunset
At the start and end of any day there are amazing light qualities ranging from the delicate pinks and blues of sunrise to the vibrant golds, oranges and reds of sunset. All of them are just begging to be captured on paper or canvas.
The artworks that are still for sale will be listed in the online shop. Click on the image to take you to the shop for details and how to purchase.
A trio of Gemsbok (aka oryx) pictured as I remembered them from childhood days in Africa in the Kalahari Desert.
The painting, done in tinted charcoal paints and watercolours, shows the first rays of the day's sun adding a golden tint to the edges of the sand dunes.
The golden light from the setting sun is reflected in the waves gently lapping the shores around Southport in this watercolour painting.
It features a lone figure, hands in pockets and head down lost in thought, striding out across the wet sands.
Sunset over the Shetland Isles where the fading rays of sunlight are reflected in the rippling waves lapping on shore.
The scene is drawn in soft pastel on mid-brown paper.
As the setting sun gets low on the horizon, beams of sunlight break through the mass of dark clouds and stream across a harbour.
The sunlight and clouds are dramatically reflected in the water as the beams of light reach out to highlight the boatshed and pathway on the opposite side. Painted in acrylics on paper.
Dramatic colours created by the setting sun are reflected in the waters of a Scottish loch.
In the foreground are the ruins of a castle which is backlit against the setting sun to add more drama to the scene which is painted in watercolours.
This watercolour painting takes the viewer down a snow-covered road heading into town on a misty early morning.
Snow-laden trees and snow piled on the stone walls and field gate give a crisp, cool feel to the foreground that contrasts with the pale, hazy shapes of the town ahead with its towers and spires looming up out of the misty background.
Sunrise in front of Mont Saint Michel in northern France.
The pale pinks and purples of the sky are reflected in the water while the mount itself is silhouetted in a dramatic purple/black watercolour echoed in the bits of foreground beach emerging from the water. SOLD
Vibrant, hot colours of a sunset are reflected in the lake which has a waterfall flowing into it and cascades pouring out of it.
The red hot colours of the water racing round the rocks is reminiscent of lava flow in this dramatic scene painted in acrylics on stretched canvas.
Pinks and purples suggest the colours of early morning so we are watching people - early morning commuters, maybe? - crossing an arched bridge that is partially reflected in the waters below.
The wet-on-wet watercolour technique used in the background suggests the shapes of skyscrapers in a busy city scene.
Pale pink colours of sunrise are reflected on both the snow and the water in this wintery painting of the scene behind my sister's stableyard.
The white of the snow-laden tree branches crossing the stream make a dramatic contrast with the dark of those branches painted in watercolours.
I chose metallic watercolours for most of this painting of Mont Saint Michel at sunrise.
Only the dark foreground is done in standard watercolour so the metallic paints give off glints and sparkles in different lights or as you move and view it from different angles.
Pinks and purples suggest the colours of early morning in this watercolour scene, but the depth of colour throughout and the amount of details in the foreground suggests that the sun is nearly fully risen.
There are people rushing through the scene - possibly late early morning commuters? One is climbing up the arched bridge that is reflected in the waters below while the other is further ahead and heading out of the scene.
The low sun just above the horizon throws out an array of colours through oranges to pinks and purples. These are reflected in the vast lake of water leading up to the jetty which is also reflected in the shallow water.
The compositional placement of the jetty invites you to walk along it as you enjoy the peaceful moments of this special time of day. Painted in watercolours.
